Five wine regions to visit near Adelaide

Five wine regions to visit near Adelaide

There are nine Great Wine Capitals of the world, among them Bordeaux, France; the Napa Valley, California, US; and Adelaide, South Australia. While you're visiting South Australia, hire a small car in Glenelg and make sure you get to these five wine regions near Adelaide.

Barossa Valley

Found just 60 kilometres northeast of Adelaide, Barossa Valley is one of Australia's best-known wine regions. For seven generations, grape growers and wine makers have been living here, and there are now more than 80 cellar doors, as well as over 150 wineries. While you're visiting, you may as well sample some amazing local produce, which you'll find along the Butcher, Baker, Wine Maker Trail.

Adelaide Hills

The most accessible wine region from Adelaide is the Adelaide Hills, which lie just twenty kilometres east of the city, in the Mount Lofty Ranges. Two of the area's cutest villages are Hahndorf and Lobethal, both of which were settled by Germans. Vines have been growing here since 1839 and there are now more than 50 wineries.

Clare Valley

Clare Valley, with about 30 wineries, is smaller than the Barossa and the Adelaide Hills. You'll find it 100 kilometres north of Adelaide. It is best known for its Riesling, but the Shiraz and Cabernet are excellent, too. Another point of interest is the varied architecture, which ranges from heritage-listed buildings dating to the 19th century, to cutting-edge architectural feats.

Eden Valley

It's easy to visit Eden Valley while you're in Barossa - it's just next door. Here, you'll want to try plenty of Riesling and Shiraz. In between tastings, go walking among ancient red gums, kangaroo spotting in Kaiserstuhl Conservation Park and explore 150 years of wine making history.

Coonawarra

Coonawarra requires a slightly longer drive, as it's 380 kilometres south of Adelaide on the Limestone Coast. However, the Cabernet Sauvignon, for which the region has a highly respected reputation, is definitely worth the effort. There are just over 30 wineries to explore and you can count on trying some unusual creations - the focus is on experimentation and uniqueness, as well as quality.
